Stern Kit A

A Multi-Sensory Approach to the First Years of Mathematics Instruction

Stern Kit A 'Experimenting with numbers' Arithmetic, a branch of mathematics, can and should be taught from the beginning in the early years so as to enable children to think and to reason things out for themselves. For example, in the 10-box children fit together pairs of blocks that total 10 before number names have been assigned.

Developing Number Skills with Experimenting with Numbers - Book 1

This teaching is delivered in three stages:

Level I
Number Games Without Number Names.
Children experiment using a range of apparatus to develop a number sense
Level II
Introducing Number Names Counting and Language
Children should be eager and now ready to talk about what they have discovered in their experiments, therefore we assign the names of each number block and pattern board. Children learn to count and have a specific focus on language development.
Level III
Introducing number Symbols - Linking to number blocks and pattern boards
When children have learned the symbol that stands for each number block, they are ready to learn to record the number combinations they have been discovering in the experiments with the apparatus.
