Stern kit A - Level III

Introducing Number Symbols

The number symbols 1 to 10 and 0 as well as the signs +, -, and = will be introduced.

In the previous level children understood and learned to state the addition facts that they found with the Stern Structural Arithmetic materials, saying, ‘6 and 4 are as big as 10’. In Level III they learn to use the + sign and the = sign to set up an equation. They will learn to record such a fact using the proper signs and symbols:
6 + 4 = 10.

Children should be able to perform the following tasks:

Counting Board with coloured number blocks, number markers and number guideCounting Board

  • To name each number symbol or numeral from 1 to 10
  • To put the numbers in sequence 1 to 10
  • To know the number for each block
  • To know the meaning of the plus sign
  • To know that 0 stands for no block

Pattern Boards 1 to 10 with number markers showing equation 5 + 1 =Pattern Boards and Cubes

  • To know the number for each pattern
  • To know the meaning of the signs +, -, and =
  • To be able to act out a subtraction word problem with cubes
  • To read and understand an equation
  • To use + or – and = to form an equation

The 7-Box teaching number bonds to 710-Box

  • To record the related subtraction facts
  • To demonstrate and record an equation from hearing an addition story
  • To demonstrate and record an equation from hearing a subtraction story

Number Boxes 1 to 9

  • The same goals as for the 10-box but without complete mastery of the facts

Level I
Number Games Without Number Names.
Children experiment using a range of apparatus to develop a number sense
Level II
Introducing Number Names Counting and Language
Children should be eager and now ready to talk about what they have discovered in their experiments, therefore we assign the names of each number block and pattern board. Children learn to count and have a specific focus on language development.
