Children talk about their discoveries
Children learn how to put into words the discoveries
they are making with the materials. They learn the name
for each number block by counting up to its place in
the sequence or by counting its units. Now when they
put two blocks together, they can tell us what they
equal in their own words. They soon learn to express
these facts in the language of mathematics.
Children should be able to perform the following tasks:
Counting
Board
-
To count from one to ten
-
To enumerate objects
-
To give each number block its name
-
To find the number block that is described by the
words, ‘one bigger than’, ‘one smaller
than’, ‘comes after a certain block’,
‘comes before’, ‘comes between’,
and ‘is equal to’
Pattern
Boards and Cubes
-
To give each number pattern its name
-
To understand the characteristics of odd and even
numbers
-
To name the number that will result when any of
the following acts are demonstrated with cubes:
- Adding 1 to a number
- Subtracting 1 from a number
- Adding 2 to a number
- Subtracting 2 from a number
- Adding or subtracting 0
10-Box
-
To name the block combinations that fill the 10-box
-
To know the combinations without the materials
-
To demonstrate the facts that result from adding
1 or adding 2 in the staircase
