Inclusive teaching Programmes to suit ALL children from age 3 to 11

Stern's foundation programme underpins the building blocks of number work
  • Stern's equipment develops a child's natural sense of numbers and number concept
  • Stern stimulates, encourages or strengthens a child's cognitive learning systems - required for meaningful learning to take place - through visual, auditory and kinaesthetic teaching and learning
  • The equipment and measurement approach makes obvious the relationships between numbers and number patterns
  • number facts are processed more quickly as 'recall' from long-term memory, saving time and space in working-memory for ongoing processes. This makes for quicker and more efficient calculation
  • Stern's specific number structure as seen in the Pattern Boards enables children to see pattern in numbers, visualise connections between numbers, perceive structures within numbers and picture base ten structures.

Also developing, is a child's ability to:

  • See pattern in numbers
  • See connections between numbers
  • See structures within numbers
  • Picture base ten structures

The foundation building blocks of number work

Maths Extra's Charlotte Clock resource and Stern's Structural Arithmetic teaching programmes use multisensory materials to teach mathematical concepts and life enhancing skills. Experimenting with Structural Arithmetic materials form the core of the programme. The apparatus, which was designed to make the structure of the number system visible, enables pupils to discover number concepts and to gain insight into the meaning of each operation addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.

The structure of these products has been designed to be inclusive, allowing children with varying levels of ability, used in different settings, to benefit from the teaching.
